Emily I.

Lakewood Family YMCA

We all spend most of our days at work and, hopefully, we have friendly co-workers who encourage us. However, for Emily, this wasn’t the case. Even though Emily loved her job, negative comments from her co-workers about her weight were taking a toll on her happiness and self-esteem.

“I needed a positive place to come after work, so I started working out at the Y. When I am here I don’t have to worry about other people’s opinions of me, how other people look at me, or if they are judging me or not.”

After a few months, Emily decided to try the “Making Change Stick” workshop. The workshop’s focus on not only physical change, but also holistic healing struck a chord with Emily. She immediately signed up for next the Journey to Freedom class.

“Journey to Freedom gave me great insight into unresolved tensions and relationships in my life. I am learning more about myself and how I interact with the world,” said Emily on the last day of class.

“I am so thankful for the Y; it has become a safe place for me. Whether I am here to broaden my mind or hop on a machine, I know it is ok to be here.”
