In America, the zip code you’re born in can determine your future. The Y’s programs and services create opportunities to succeed, no matter where you grow up.

Summer of Service provides participants an intense, hands on, cultural immersion at the Sioux YMCA in Dupree, South Dakota. By spending a week on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Reservation, our teens work directly with the community by planning and delivering a week of day camp for the youth in Dupree. This will be the 6th year that a handful of teens from our Y will participate in this unique and impactful cultural experience.

Program Goals

  • Build relationships
  • Cultural understanding and awareness
  • Respect for cultural diversity and uniqueness of others
  • Better comprehension of the world that we live in

As you might expect, our group gets as much out of the experience as do the kids in Dupree. Teens will have a cultural, historical and socio-economic experience that will give them a different and deeper appreciation of the YMCAs impact.
