Whitney D.

Tacoma Center YMCA

Initially coming to the Y to play basketball, Whitney has been part of the Y since he was seven years old.

“I had a lot of friends growing up who were in gangs,” said Whitney. “But I always knew where we could go, where we would all be safe, and be surrounded by people who wanted the best for us.”

Whitney says he wasn’t a bad kid by any means, but still need that positive environment where he was surrounded by young adults who believed in him. Whitney accredits his mentors at the YMCA not only to encouraging him to stick with the sport, but as being able to obtain a full ride basketball scholarship and later a law degree from Georgetown University.

Whitney is proud to give back and support the organization that helped foster his development as a young man. Now a volunteer, donor and branch advisory council member, Whitney says he lives by the motto, “To whom much is given, much is owed.”
