Tim U.

Lakewood Family YMCA

When Tim’s doctor told him that there was a spot on his lung that could be cancerous, he knew that his life would never be the same. He was diagnosed with lung cancer, but it turned out he was lucky – they’d caught the spot early. He immediately started treatment, determined to beat it. After six months of treatment, his cancer care team suggested that he join LIVESTRONG at the YMCA to support his transition back to normal life and continue to improve his health.

Tim found a LIVESTRONG group at the Lakewood Family YMCA. Over the course of the program, he lost 17 pounds, changed the way he ate, and started to exercise three times a week. Through LIVESTRONG, he got connected to a FitPath coach, who helped Tim form a new exercise habit.

“From the beginning, the Y supported the motivation I had to improve my health,” Tim said. “In fact, my FitPath coach asked me what my goal was. I said, ‘To stay motivated and keep coming.’ They were very encouraging, made it feel life a safe place to be, and I'm still coming.”

After completing the FitPath program, Tim wanted to help others improve their health and well-being and became a volunteer FitPath coach. You can find him upstairs helping other members reach their fitness goals.
