University Y Student Center
To some, the University Y Student Center is either a student center or a community gym. For Omer, it’s both. But it didn’t start that way.
“When I first came to the Y as a University of Washington Tacoma (UWT) student, I was nervous,” said Omer. “But after I joined student government, I was forced to come more often, and then I got to see so many people and fellow peers, it really felt like a sense of community."
Omer comes to the Y every day, except for the month of Ramadan. You can find him playing video games with his friends, running the indoor track, or studying for his future career in cyber security.
As president for the Muslim Student Association (MSA), Omer uses spaces at the Y for the group to meet, which exposes more students to the Y.
“I think the students here make the Y feel more open,” said Omer. “I can relate to more people, and I am more comfortable here.”
