Gordon Family YMCA
Marilyn had lived her whole life without exercising and was in her mid-60s when she was diagnosed with COPD. Her health started to deteriorate rapidly shortly after diagnosis, leading to three separate emergency room visits. The weakness was so overwhelming, Marilyn knew she had to start actively working for her wellness. She decided to start walking to get her strength up, so she joined the Gordon Family YMCA.
?At first, I could barely walk five minutes without getting out of breath,? she said. ?I kept on going every day and by the end of the second month, I had accumulated 50 miles... that all started with that first lap.?
During that time, Marilyn lost 15 pounds and her cholesterol level dropped from 285 to 201. Now, Marilyn makes it her goal to try to walk at least a mile every day and attends Silver Sneakers and water aerobics classes. She expresses gratitude to staff for their encouragement, and particularly Linette for the positive high-fives that help to keep her going.
?I am learning about the good and bad days that come with COPD. I believe I have to keep moving to keep myself healthy,? Marilyn said. ?I am so thankful for Gordon Family Y."
