Gordon Family YMCA

I am a lifeguard and I teach swimming lessons. Normally I teach 3-to-5-year-olds how to swim. You really get to know all of the people that come in. The little kids that come in and swim, especially the ones that you teach get to know you. There’s a little girl that I teach and afterwards, she eats her snack and watches me lifeguard. And her mom asks her, “Do you want to go home?” and she goes, “No, I want to sit and watch Katie lifeguard!”

This job is more than just teaching kids what’s on the roster and checking stuff off. It’s about building up their confidence and helping them not only in swimming, but in life to be more confident and to try new things, even if they seem scary, because there’s people looking out for you.
