YMCA athletes and twins Katiana and Kirandra Welsheimer are no strangers to competition, as they have competed on the Lakewood Family YMCA Grace Gymnastics team. In July 2012, the girls won the title as National Juvenile Pairs Champions in baton twirling, beating out more than 800 athletes for the title.
The girls are coached by their mom, who is a certified coach and judge through the United States Twirling Association and also a past Alaska State Twirling Champion. The routine the girls performed to capture their title was an "All Catch" routine, which means they did not drop the baton even once through the program.
Katiana and Kirsandra are excited they also placed second in the International Cup competition and represented the U.S. in the international competition in Almeere City, Netherlands, in August 2013.
Both girls aspire to work toward a twirling position at a university, and appreciate the support they get from the Y and its members.
