When second grader Iulio started attending YMCA Before and After School Child Care, he was reading at a first grade level. He felt embarrassed around his peers and didn't enjoy school. Iulio was determined to improve his reading level, so he worked with Y staff during homework time to practice his skills as he worked his way from picture books to chapter books.
Staff made learning fun as he practiced his skills during an academic decathlon and trivia games. Iulio's reading level is now nearly at a sixth grade level and his renewed sense of confidence has made him a leader among his classmates.
"When I heard Iulio say for the first time 'I like coming to school now' it brought tears to my eyes,"said December Saldana, Y staff.
