Allison joined the Y with a goal to conquer her fear of the water and get in shape. As she gained confidence in the water, her fitness goals slowly evolved into competing in endurance sports.
"I found every excuse possible not to go to that first swim lesson," said Allison. "But the staff here are phenomenal."
Allison has competed in a Lazy Man Ironman, finished five marathons, and is currently training for a half Ironman.
"I was always the last person to be picked in gym class, so sports just didn't seem accessible to me," said Allison. “That stigma of always finishing last really sticks with you, so for me, that transition into such an intense training mode for an endurance event has been totally unexpected."
While Allison is busy training, her husband and two kids are usually at the Y, working towards their own goals in youth sports and swim lessons. The variety of activities available helps Allison and her family stay active and healthy together.
"I feel that when you’re part of the Y you feel like you’re part of a community," said Allison. "It’s such a powerful message that you belong here."
