More than a century ago, Sonora Smart Dodd aspired to to create a holiday to honor fathers like her own, who, after the loss of his wife, did the painstaking work of raising six children of his own. With the support of some ministers in her hometown of Spokane, Washington, her idea came to fruition when the first official Father's Day was celebrated at the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910.

Father's Day is just around the corner. Stop by and write a Thank You card to a Father figure in your life.

Just remember, a father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow.

"A Farewell to Arms."
From time to time, the question arises, "What's the Y's policy on weapons in the facility?"

Because of the nature of our work, especially our youth programs, weapons (knives, brass knuckles, guns, etc.) are prohibited in our facilities. If you arrive at the Y in possession of one of the aforementioned items, please alert the Manager on Duty, who will be happy to help you store in our lock box while you exercise.

A Safety Soundbite from our Risk Manager:

Hold the Phone. Just a gentle reminder that the use of mobile devices and cameras is restricted in our locker rooms as a safety measure to protect your privacy and the safety of our kids.

Also, as a courtesy to your fellow members, please refrain from taking personal phone calls while using exercise equipment. It's a little awkward and can be a distraction. Thank you!

Our Safety and Risk Manager shares some safety soundbites in honor of National Safety Month.

First on the list- Beat that heat! Maintain your health during the rising temperatures:
1.) Drink a quart of fluids per hour.
2.) Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can speed dehydration.
3.) Take it easy- limit your time directly in the sun, and remember not to overexert yourself.
4.) Never leave children or pets alone in the car, even for a minute.
5. Wear sunscreen!

What are you doing this summer?

If you are looking to fill your schedule with fun, outside activities, join us Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at 12:15pm for our Bootcamp class.

As the weather gets nicer, the more the class will be venturing out into Downtown Tacoma.

#tbt The Y has been making waves in water safety for over a hundred years. The nation's first "swimming bath" was housed in a New York YMCA in 1884. Just 24 years later, the first group swimming lesson occurred at a YMCA in Detroit.

Last year, the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties alone collectively taught more than 74,268 swim lessons!

At every age and every level of activity, you will find people just like you looking to become a little healthier. The Y has the facilities, equipment, programs, staff, and dedicated membership to support you as you choose your path a healthier lifestyle. 

The Tacoma Center YMCA offers a variety of fitness classes for all levels and abilities. All classes are included in your YMCA membership and available on a drop-in basis.

The pool closes at 9pm Monday-Friday, and 30 minutes prior to closing on Saturday and Sunday.

Tacoma Center offers programs and services for adults ages 15 and older Monday-Friday. Youth are allowed on Saturdays and Sundays when they are accompanied by an adult.

FitPath is an appointment designed specifically for members ages 10 and older who want to have a tailored, progressive fitness plan. Our Health and Well-being staff will meet with you to discuss your goals to create a program that's right for you.

Our certified personal trainers will use their knowledge of current research concepts, principles of sound exercise, and state-of-the-art equipment to design and implement a program tailored just for you. Contact Deb Delong at 253-906-9945.
