To say it’s been easy would be a joke but to say it’s not worth it would be a lie. With the days feeling so unpredictable, it is no wonder we sometimes feel lost in all the chaos but despite the insanity we face every day, we are a resilient group of people and a resilient organization. Even then, that doesn’t change the fact that sometimes life might get a little overwhelming. It is in those moments that I am often made aware of much we have grown; as a team and as individuals. The days seem to zoom by and we often don’t take the time to pause and reflect on the lessons we have learned, both great and small. Today I am hoping to share a few of my favorite mantras and discoveries I try to embody in this crazy Y world we live in.

I am never alone – Right when you think you are the only one feeling a little overwhelmed, or a little lost, odds are your neighbor is feeling the same way. What an encouraging feeling it is to know we have friends to lean on in our community centers and across our association.

I will never stop growing – You never know who will impact you, when they will impact you, and how they will impact you. There are so many inspiring leaders among our teams and they are always teaching us, even if we don’t know it at the time.

Stand my ground and remember I am strong – To reference my previous mantra, an impactful leader I have had throughout my career was and still is Kate Hardeman. What a force she is! If there is one word I could use to describe Kate, it would be Strength. Kate has taught me how to fight, how to be strong, how to be confident in any and all my roles. Kate has helped shape me into the leader I am today. Even now I still find myself thinking when I feel unsure, what would Kate do?

Never stop believing that I am capable of doing great things – When my Y career began, I was completing an internship at the Haselwood YMCA. My original plan was to complete my internship, then see what my options were in the world, and in the meantime, work part-time as a health coach. Obviously, my plans have since changed. Since then, I have served as a Health and Well-Being Director at Tom Taylor and Morgan, and now I serve as Senior Health and Well-Being Director for the Gordon team. When tasks or goals feel impossible I like to take a trip down memory lane and remember all that I have accomplished. It’s crazy to think how much I have been able to squeeze into 4 years with this ever-changing organization.

We are stronger together – Like I said at the beginning, to say it’s been easy would be a joke but to say it’s not worth it would be a lie. We could not do this work alone and there is no other group of people I would rather fight in the trenches or surf the waves with. We come from so many different backgrounds and have our own unique lens on life but the combination of our many differences makes us powerful.
