We are proud to celebrate Women’s History Month at the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties, a time dedicated to honoring the contributions of women throughout history and in modern society. Women have played a vital role in shaping our world and creating positive change.
Throughout history, women have faced countless barriers to equality, including limited access to education and employment, unequal pay, and discrimination. Despite these challenges, women have persevered and made remarkable contributions to their communities, their countries, and the world.
The suffrage movement was a significant moment in women’s history, a decades-long movement to secure voting rights for women. Women who organized marches, protests, and hunger strikes were sometimes met with arrests and imprisonment, but in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was finally ratified and women were granted the right to vote.
The women’s liberation movement of the 1960s and 1970s fought for women’s equality in all aspects of life, including the workplace, politics, and social life. Women in the U.S. faced discrimination in the workplace, limited reproductive rights, and widespread sexual harassment and assault. This movement challenged traditional gender roles and had a profound impact on society, leading to important legal reforms like Title IX, which prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex in any educational program or activity that receives federal funding; the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which prohibited credit discrimination on the basis of sex or marital status; the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which prohibited employment discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, and other medical conditions.
We believe that it is essential to celebrate the stories of women from all backgrounds and cultures, including women of color, LGBTQ+ women, and women with disabilities. By highlighting these stories, we can build a more inclusive and equitable society and inspire future generations of women to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact in their communities.
We invite you to join us in celebrating women of all creeds and backgrounds this month.
