Wellness that Lasts a Lifetime

Falls Prevention Awareness Week at the Y
Share

Falls Prevention Awareness Week is September 22-26, 2025!

This nationwide campaign is dedicated to increasing awareness about falls, health, and injury prevention. Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for older adults. But here’s the good news: falling is not an inevitable part of aging

With practical lifestyle adjustments, evidence-based programs, and strong community support, we can all take steps to reduce the risk of falls and live with greater strength, mobility, and confidence. At the Y, we’re here year-round to help you and your loved ones stay active, improve stability, and strengthen bones through functional movement and safe, effective exercise.

Practical steps to prevent falls:

  • Get Regular Hearing and Vision Checks: Corrective lenses and hearing aids help maintain awareness of one's surroundings.
  • Make Home Safety Adjustments: Remove tripping hazards like loose rugs, cords, and clutter. Add grab bars and handlebars in commonly used areas.
  • Wear Safe Footwear: Choose non-slip, supportive footwear with closed toes.
  • Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Dehydration and low blood sugar can cause weakness and dizziness, leading to falls.

Here’s how the Y supports you in preventing falls and building confidence through movement:

  • Improve Strength and Balance: Programs like Enhance®Fitness and mobility-based classes build strength and improve balance, two of the most critical factors in preventing falls.
  • Community Support: Staying consistent is easier with encouragement. At the Y, you’ll find social connection and a supportive community that shares your commitment to healthy living.
  • Educational Resources: We share practical tips on reducing the risk of falls, both at home and in your community.
