How Kitsap Mental Health Services Supports Employee Wellness Through the YMCA

Share

Through the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties' corporate membership program, employers can help make wellness more accessible by offering Y memberships as a workplace benefit. Kitsap Mental Health Services (KMHS) extended that opportunity to its employees and their families, giving them places to stay active and build community. October marked the one year anniversary of the partnership, and employees shared their praise via an anonymous survey.

For one KMHS employee, that membership has created something difficult to find amid conflicting schedules: time together as a family.

"I use the YMCA almost every day, and my wife and daughter use it too," they shared. "More importantly, it has become something that brings our family closer."

Small Steps That Build Confidence

Two adults participate in a group fitness activity at a YMCA gym, passing a black medicine ball during a workout while other participants exercise in the background.

For some employees, getting started meant setting an achievable goal.

"Telling myself that even if I go for 30 minutes one time a week, it's better than not going at all. That's the mindset that got the momentum going."

This employee now visits three to four times a week and has gained confidence using weight machines and particularly enjoys quiet mornings in the gym before work.

For another employee, the benefit makes it possible to prioritize wellness with her husband.

"I enjoy going to the gym with my husband. It's great having a partner in fitness," they shared. "We probably wouldn't be able to afford the monthly fee for both of us. I really value the benefit that KMHS offers!"

At the Bremerton Family YMCA, KMHS employees found a welcoming community.

"Their group exercise instructors are fantastic! They really make the effort to get to know you and make you feel welcome."

Bring Wellness to Your Workplace

The Y works with businesses of all sizes to create custom corporate membership agreements. Employers covering membership costs receive a 20% discount, and join fees are waived. Flexible billing arrangements help businesses incorporate benefits into their operations.

Membership provides access to nine community centers across Pierce and Kitsap Counties, many of which offer pools. Benefits also include swimming lessons and other scheduled programming at no additional cost and access to YMCA360's virtual classes.

For KMHS employees, the value of access to the Y carries into everyday life. It makes room for a morning workout before work or time with family that might otherwise be difficult to find. By helping remove the financial barrier, employers can give their teams opportunities to care for themselves and connect with others. Learn more today.
