Every weekend, 11-year-old Enando has a routine he looks forward to. He heads to the Lakewood Family YMCA with his family to ride the bikes, use the rope pull machine, and spend time in the pool. What started as a small lifestyle change has become an important part of his week and a source of confidence, structure, and healthy habits.

About a year ago, Enando’s family decided they needed to make some changes together. Enando, who is autistic, was struggling with unhealthy eating habits, low activity levels, and excessive screen time. His stepmom, Gloria, says much of his free time revolved around phones, TV, and tablets, and it was becoming difficult to build healthy routines and boundaries at home.

Exercise was not something Enando enjoyed at first.

“He didn’t like it,” Gloria said with a laugh. “But we started small and just asked him to try.”

The family came to the Y on weekends, focusing on consistency instead of perfection. At first, Enando resisted the bikes and strength equipment. Now, those are some of his favorite activities. He especially enjoys the interactive bikes that let him ride through digital trails and scenery while he exercises.

Over time, the changes began to add up. Enando started drinking more water, trying new foods, and becoming more active. The family also noticed that regular exercise helped reduce some of his dependence on screens by giving him something active and engaging to look forward to each week.

“He gets excited to come here,” Gloria said. “If we don’t come, he gets upset.”

The physical changes have been noticeable, too. Enando has lost 30 pounds and has more energy than ever. His family says exercise has also helped improve his sleep schedule and overall routine.

More importantly, the Y has become a place where the family can spend intentional time together while building healthy habits that support Enando’s growth and independence.

“He’s come a long way,” Gloria said. “I never thought he would change like that, but now he really loves being here.”

At the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties, stories like Enando’s show how small, consistent routines can make a lasting impact. Whether it’s swimming, youth fitness, or simply spending time together as a family, the Y provides a supportive space where people of all ages can build healthier habits one step at a time.
