At the Lakewood Family YMCA, volunteer Teddy is known for his kindness and dedication to the community, whether he’s setting out food in the community pantry, cleaning the parking lot, or stopping to connect with members.
His own journey has been transformative. Just a few years ago, Teddy weighed 450 pounds while also managing bipolar and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Through healthier habits, staying active, and becoming deeply involved at the YMCA, he’s lost more than 200 pounds and built a strong network of friendships and support along the way.
Teddy is also an active participant in Rally for the Y, helping raise support for YMCA programs and services that make memberships and opportunities accessible for everyone in the community.
What makes Teddy especially meaningful to the Lakewood Family YMCA community is the care he shows for others. During a recent conversation, longtime member Betty shared how much his support meant to her after the loss of her husband of 63 years. Teddy offered thoughtful gestures she still treasures today, including a rose, a flag, and a two-dollar bill.
Even without a car, Teddy regularly picks up food and walks it to the YMCA using a grocery cart, continuing to show up for the community however he can.
Teddy’s generosity and consistency have made him a familiar and valued part of the Lakewood Family YMCA community. From supporting his fellow members through difficult moments to quietly helping wherever he’s needed, he represents the kind of everyday care that helps people feel welcome when they walk through the doors.
