Beginning this summer, more kids in University Place will have the chance to get in the game.
The City of University Place and the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties are partnering to expand youth sports programming across local parks and school district facilities. It’s a practical step forward that builds on what both organizations do best. The City brings accessible spaces, and the Y brings experience in youth development, program design, and creating environments where kids feel supported.
Together, that means more opportunities for families right in their own community.
This summer, the partnership will offer sports clinics designed to help kids learn the fundamentals while developing confidence and a sense of teamwork. For many kids, it’s the first introduction to being part of a team or trying something new.
In the fall, programming will expand to include a youth basketball league, along with additional volleyball clinics. More details on schedules and registration will be shared in the coming weeks, with the YMCA leading registration, staffing, and programming.
For the City, the partnership is about making better use of existing resources while increasing access for families.
“This new partnership with the Y presents a cost-effective and exciting way for us to provide opportunities for high-quality youth recreation programming to our residents,” said Mayor Stan Flemming. “We have many facilities, both indoor and outdoor, that are available and ready for this effort. We’re excited that this program will provide additional access to sports and recreation for all kids living in University Place.”
For the YMCA, this new partnership represents what’s possible when two organizations work together towards a common goal.
“Together, we can remove barriers and create more opportunities for kids to build confidence, develop skills, and experience the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a team,” said Charlie Davis, President and CEO of YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties. “We’re proud to expand access to youth sports for families in partnership with the City of University Place.”
Youth sports are about more than learning how to play. They’re a place where kids can build friendships, learn to work together, and develop confidence that carries into other parts of their lives. This partnership helps make those experiences more accessible to families across University Place, so more kids can enjoy everything that comes with being part of a team.
