Members of the Gordon Family YMCA can now experience a new approach to relaxation and recovery with the RedZone Redlight and Infrared Sauna. This innovative wellness feature brings together two technologies in one convenient space designed to support recovery, relaxation, and overall well being.
The Gordon Family YMCA is the first YMCA in the United States to offer the RedZone Red Light and Infrared Sauna, making it a unique addition to the Y’s growing wellness spaces.
How Infrared Heat and Red Light Work
Unlike a traditional sauna that heats the air around you, an infrared sauna uses light waves to warm the body directly. Infrared energy penetrates the skin and gently raises tissue temperature, which can help improve circulation and relax muscles while operating at lower temperatures than conventional saunas. This creates a different type of sauna experience that many people find more comfortable while still delivering the relaxing warmth people expect from a sauna.
The RedZone unit also includes red and near infrared LED light panels. These wavelengths of light can pass through the outer layers of the skin and interact with cells beneath the surface. Red light therapy is often used in wellness and recovery spaces as part of recovery routines.
By offering infrared heat with targeted red light exposure in a single session, the RedZone creates a recovery experience designed to help members relax, recharge, and support their wellness routine.
A Simple, Personalized Experience
Using the RedZone is simple. Members can start a session using the touchscreen inside the sauna, which allows them to customize the experience.
Users can adjust the heat level, select specific red light panels or use all panels, and control optional relaxation music built into the unit. Sessions typically last 15 minutes, and using the RedZone is recommended two to three times a week for best results.
Because the red light panels are very bright, protective eyewear is required when using the red light feature. Glasses are available to borrow at the membership desk.
Red Light FAQ’s
Can I bring my phone into the RedZone sauna?
We do not recommend bringing your phone inside, as the sauna has a minimum temperature of 100 degrees F.
I have a medical condition; can I still use the RedZone sauna?
We recommend reaching out to your medical provider or doctor if you have any questions about whether red light and infrared saunas are right for you.
What type of clothing should I wear during the session?
Clothing is required in the RedZone sauna. Light gym attire is recommended.
What is the wavelength of the red lights?
The RedZone sauna uses six dual-wavelength red light panels (600-650 and 800-850 nanometers) that work with far- and near-infrared heaters. The wavelengths are strong enough to penetrate through light clothing.
How do I know if the RedZone sauna is in use?
The door to the RedZone sauna is partially frosted for privacy, but also allows you to see if the red lights are turned on or in use.
Part of the Y’s Expanding Wellness Spaces
The RedZone is part of a growing collection of recovery and wellness features at YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties locations. At the Gordon Family YMCA, members can also access hydromassage chairs and cryo lounge chairs designed to help relax muscles and support recovery.
These features are available through a $15 a month wellness package add on, which members can sign up for at the membership desk.
By offering spaces like the RedZone, the Y continues to expand opportunities for members to care for their physical and mental well-being in ways that fit their lifestyle.
