Something bright is about to arrive in Tacoma, University Place, and Fircrest. To celebrate the new Pearl Street Family YMCA, opening January 1, 2026, we’re inviting you to hunt for Pearl Shines. Inspired by the beloved Monkeyshines tradition that brings color and creativity to our city each winter, this citywide art and discovery project celebrates the spirit that makes Tacoma shine.

Starting today, 150 hand-blown glass Pearl Shines created by Hilltop Artists will be placed carefully around our community. Last night, 77 of them were hidden throughout Tacoma, Fircrest, and University Place with support from local organizations like Parks Tacoma.

Guidance While You Search

If you find a Pearl Shine, you’re welcome to keep it as a token of celebration. Here are some basic rules and guidelines to follow to ensure a safe and fun experience for everyone:

  • If you find more than one, we ask you to re-hide it for someone else to discover.
  • Please remember to be safe and respectful while searching.
  • Stay on established paths, avoid planted areas, and be mindful of others who might be looking.
  • All Pearl Shines will be hidden outdoors.
  • There will be no Pearl Shines hidden on any YMCA properties.
  • There will be no Pearl Shines hidden inside businesses, community centers, or other types of buildings.

As with traditional Monkeyshines, clues will take you from neighborhood parks and trails to cozy spots where you might stop for coffee or ice cream. We hope that spending time with family and friends outdoors in our community will energize your mind, body, and spirit.

“These Shines are a way for our community to join us in celebrating this milestone," says Jared Johnson, Executive Director of the Pearl Street Family YMCA. “We can’t wait to welcome you into our new space.”

Keep an eye on Pearl Street Family YMCA on Instagram and Facebook for additional details and clues. Happy hunting!
