Taking the first steps towards better health is not a one-time decision or a short-term goal. It’s a journey that unfolds over weeks, months, and years, shaped by habits we build and the support systems we surround ourselves with. At the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties, we believe your well-being comes from sustainable lifestyle changes rooted in education, encouragement, and community.
Whether you’re looking to manage your weight, improve your overall health, or reduce your risk of chronic disease, the Y offers evidence-based programs designed to help you succeed in the long run. Two of these programs, the YMCA Weight Loss Program and the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), are powerful tools for building healthier habits that can last well beyond a single season.
Creating Sustainable Change: YMCA Weight Loss Program
The YMCA Weight Loss Program is a 12-week, evidence-based program for adults 18 and older who want to improve their health in a realistic and sustainable way. Rather than focusing on strict rules with short-term outcomes, the program helps participants make modest changes that fit into their everyday lives.
“It was a life-changing and more importantly a life-saving experience. I am healthier and happier than I have been in a very long time – probably at least 30 years. I wanted something that would guide and encourage me in the right direction for me.” -Kathy, former participant
What makes the program especially effective is its focus on personalization for each participant. Through guided learning and group discussion, participants gain the tools and confidence to build a lifestyle that supports their unique needs and priorities. Additionally, the program offers accountability and connection, which many people need to stay consistent over time. Being part of a support group helps participants stay motivated and engaged as they work toward long-term change.
Participants meet once a week for an hour, either in person or online, making it accessible for a variety of schedules. Each session explores key topics such as nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, goal setting, and long-term sustainability. Participants are encouraged to reflect on what is working, identify challenges, and set achievable goals for the week ahead.

Reducing Diabetes Risk with Diabetes Prevention Program
For people living with prediabetes or who are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a path to better health. This year-long, evidence-based program is recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and has been shown to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes by more than 58 percent.
DPP takes place in a small group setting and is led by a trained lifestyle coach who supports participants through the program. Participants work toward gradual and safe weight loss, healthier eating habits, and increasing physical activity to at least 150 minutes per week. The program runs for 12 months, giving participants time to build momentum and strengthen healthy habits over time.
“There’s a cool social aspect to it, as we all sort of progress through this together. You can talk about whether you make your goals without judgment. I feel better. I can be active more. I went on a trip to Europe at the end of the year and I was able to move around more and see more things,” - Olgy, former participant
Beyond the measurable health outcomes, many participants find the group setting is what sets DPP apart. Sharing progress, challenges, and encouragement with others on a similar journey helps reinforce healthy behaviors and creates a strong sense of belonging.
