"I knew that I wanted to be someplace where I could have an impact. I knew I wanted to be someplace where the community needed me." - Katie Buckley Jones, Senior Youth Program Director, Pearl Street Family YMCA

Katie Buckley-Jones' path to the YMCA has taken her through some unexpected places.

Before joining the Pearl Street Family YMCA, Katie worked as a zookeeper, managed a veterinary clinic and animal shelter, and worked for the Girl Scouts. But when she began planning a move back to Tacoma, she found herself deciding between several job opportunities. The culture she heard described at the Y made the choice clear.

During her interview, Katie heard Pearl Street staff talk about the importance of community, the relationships they had built with one another and the people they serve, as well as the center's approach to leadership.

"When I heard all of that, it was an easy yes for me," Katie said. "I knew that I wanted to be someplace where I could have an impact. I knew I wanted to be someplace where the community needed me."

For Katie, finding the right workplace has always meant looking closely at its culture. She wanted colleagues who shared a desire to make a difference and who could work together in a positive, productive way. At Pearl Street, she found that kind of team.

Coming Full Circle Through Camp

Katie Buckley-Jones rides a horse during YMCA Camp Reed as a child, reflecting the camp experiences that sparked a lifelong passion for youth programs and outdoor adventure.

Katie initially thought her connection to the Y was different from many colleagues who grew up deeply involved in YMCA programs. Then she remembered something important: camp.

Growing up, Katie attended YMCA Camp Reed, an experience she credits with first sparking her love of camp.

"The Y was my camp connection. The Y was my first spark into camp," Katie shared. "And if you know anything about me, you know I love camp."

Today, that connection has come full circle in her role as Senior Youth Program Director at the Pearl Street Family YMCA.

Katie helps lead youth programming at the center, including summer day camp, where children have opportunities to make friends, explore new interests, and build confidence through activities ranging from arts and crafts to outdoor adventures.

Following a successful summer camp season at Pearl Street, Katie continues creating positive experiences for young people and supporting the staff who make those experiences possible.

For Katie, the relationships and shared purpose that drew her to the Y continue to make her work meaningful.

Her career has taken her through many fields, but her commitment to serving others has remained constant. At Pearl Street, she's found an opportunity to combine her love of camp, her leadership experience, and her desire to make a difference in her community.
