Reaching New Heights: The Liz Rocks Climbing Wall at the Pearl Street Family YMCA

When the new Pearl Street Family YMCA opens on January 1, 2026, one of its most anticipated features will be the Liz Rocks Climbing Wall, a two-story indoor rock wall inspired by Tacoma mountaineer Liz Daley. Created in partnership with the Liz Rocks Foundation, the wall honors Liz’s adventurous spirit while providing new opportunities for underrepresented urban youth and families to discover the joy of climbing.

The wall will feature six belay stations and multiple routes that range from beginner-friendly climbs to challenges for those with more experience. Its design includes an overhang for a more challenging route as well as a crack climbing section, a rare feature for an indoor facility, that allows climbers to practice traditional techniques in a safe, controlled environment. Crack climbing involves using hands and feet to wedge into cracks naturally occurring in rocks, a method common in outdoor climbing. Vibrant panels and graphics will guide climbers through a visual story of exploration and courage, reflecting Liz’s passion for adventure.

“Seeing this project come to life with the YMCA has been so meaningful,” says Krystle Edward, president of the Liz Rocks Foundation. “Every element of the wall reflects Liz’s energy and her love for adventure. It’s going to inspire youth to learn new skills and discover the outdoors in a whole new way.”

The partnership between the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties and the Liz Rocks Foundation was a natural fit. Both share a commitment to helping young people build confidence, connection, and community through movement and exploration.

Once complete, the wall will be open to YMCA members during designated times. Climbing opportunities will include open sessions, instructional programs, and more. Helmets and harnesses will be available for children as young as five, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all ages.

Every climb will honor Liz Daley’s legacy and invite a new generation to reach new peaks.
