KickStarting My Strength Training

If my long-term health goal is to section hike the Pacific Crest Trail in my 80’s, then 40 something me is on a journey to make sure that’s possible.

As a regularly active person, I recently took a step back to evaluate my fitness routine. I’m getting movement daily with neighborhood power walks, beat winter blues with quick cardio and strength workouts. What’s missing? More structured strength training. I had a hunch I could get more out of my time on the weight machines if I had more structure, a plan and confidence that I’m doing things right.

Connecting with the YMCA Coaching Program

The good news: the YMCA has a program for that. No matter what your health goal is, KickStart is a free for members coaching program that helps you develop an easy-to-follow plan to achieve your goals.

During four (4) one-on-one meetings with a KickStart Wellness Coach, you work together to develop a customized 8 to 12-week baseline program. You set attainable goals, build your confidence and understanding of YMCA programs, fitness equipment, and gain a coach who is there to support your success.

Meeting Coach Katie

I signed up and connected with coach Katie at the Gordon Family YMCA in Sumner. While the first meeting was an interview to understand more about my goals, I was also interested in what made her want to be a coach.

Katie went on her own weight loss journey a few years ago and it was all managed with food and nutrition. To maintain her health, she wanted to learn more about fitness and was a KickStart program participant herself. She enjoyed the program so much that she was encouraged to become a coach and help others pursue their passions.

Practicing what I learned

During my coaching sessions with Katie, she showed me how to use machines I have walked past and did not notice. Turns out, I really enjoy the rope pull machine for warm up cardio, learned new exercises on the cable machine and received tips to rest more between sets, and make sure I challenge myself by adding more weight, lowering repetitions as I get stronger. One month after my first appointment, the training program we outlined is working for me. I’m thankful for Katie’s coaching, kindness and expertise.
