“There’s nothing but positivity that comes from the Pearl Street Y. I’m just really grateful for it.” - Brittney
The Pearl Street Family YMCA has been a constant in Brittney’s life. She started coming to Pearl when she was just three years old, growing up in dance classes and swim lessons. When she looks back, what stands out most aren’t just the activities, but the people who made the Y a safe and nurturing place.
“I remember the teachers. They really made a difference. The Y was a constant in my life: a safe and friendly place where you were going to be nurtured. It’s the same today for my own kids.”
Now, as a mom of two, Brittney faces the challenge many parents face of finding safe, healthy spaces where her children can grow, thrive, and belong.
The Pearl Street Family YMCA has become that place, just as it was for her growing up. Both of her children, Jack and Gemma, started at the Y when they were toddlers. Basketball, toddler gym, swim lessons; you name it, and the kids have tried it.
Nurturing Gemma’s confidence
At first, Gemma was weary about the Y and wasn’t sure which activities she’d enjoy. But once she found gymnastics, everything changed and she began to flourish. Encouraged by supportive coaches, Brittney has noticed her daughter’s confidence and perseverance continue to grow.
“It’s her thing now,” Brittney shares. "I’m glad she’s really flourished there. Just to have something she's working toward and getting good at… She’s not giving up.”
Exploration for Jack
Jack embraced the chance to try new things. At three years old, he started playing basketball at Pearl Street. As he got older, his attention shifted to swimming, where he’s been motivated to set goals and progress through the different skill levels.
“Jack has expanded his horizons at the Y. He’s done so many new things here, and it’s all in one place,” says Brittney.
Brittney also appreciates the male mentors Jack has found at the Y. The staff know his name and always check in on him, something Jack really looks forward to.
For the Whole Family
Eventually, Brittney found herself drawn to the Y for her own well-being and started taking group exercise and powerlifting classes while her kids were doing their own activities.
“There’s nothing to worry about. We all get our special time to do things we enjoy,” says Brittney. “We really have just utilized the entire Y.”
Being Healthy Together
Brittney’s family’s story is a reminder that the Pearl Street Y is a place where anyone can thrive: children grow, parents find support, and families build community.
“Pearl Street, this is a family Y. That’s what makes a difference for me,” says Brittney. “My kids are here with me and I can check in on them. They’re safe and we’re all doing something healthy together. There are so many opportunities for growth for me and my family at this Y.”
