For Ben and Penelope, the Y Feels Like Home

"Often times, kids just need more connection," - Kyle Bramble, Youth Program Director, Tom Taylor Family YMCA.

For Ben and his daughters, the Tom Taylor Family YMCA has been part of their routine for years. His oldest daughter began spending time in Child Watch about five years ago, and now his younger daughter, Penelope, is growing up in the program too.

Recently, that familiar space has become especially important.

As a single dad navigating a difficult season for his family, Ben knows that when he comes to the Y, Penelope is surrounded by people who care about her and understand what she needs.

Meeting Penelope Where She Is

Penelope brings plenty of personality to Child Watch. She can be excited, silly, and energetic, but when the room feels busy or something doesn't go as expected, her emotions can become overwhelming.

Instead of expecting her to simply push through those moments, the Child Watch team focuses on connection.

Staff give Penelope space to talk through what she is feeling. Sometimes that means heading outside to the playground for a break. Other times, it might mean practicing breathing techniques together, making a craft, joining circle time, or singing a silly song.

"Often times, kids just need more connection," shared Kyle Bramble, Youth Program Director at the Tom Taylor Family YMCA.

Those small moments of connection help Penelope feel comfortable at Child Watch while giving her opportunities to grow into herself.

Time for Ben to Be Ben

While Penelope plays in Child Watch, Ben gets something valuable too: time for himself.

He can work out and clear his head knowing his daughter is safe and cared for. When Ben knows Penelope is surrounded by people supporting her, he can step away from parenting responsibilities for a little while and focus on his own well-being.

Their story is one example of the impact Child Watch staff create every day. Through moments of care and connection, they create a place where children can grow and parents can take the time they need to care for themselves.

For Ben and Penelope, the Y has become a community where they both can continue to grow, one visit at a time.
