When Annee joined the YMCA’s diabetes prevention program, they were determined to take back their health. At the time, they relied on a scooter and wheelchair to get around and couldn’t walk more than half a block, and everyday activities often felt out of reach.
“There are no quick fixes to health,” Annee says. “What has worked for me is small groups, physical activity, and nutrition information. It’s been proven over time to be effective."
Finding Strength in Community
The Y’s Prevent T2 program gave Annee not just a starting point, but a community of support. The small group setting offered accountability and encouragement. When they coupled that with programs like Enhanced Fitness, they began to build strength and confidence as well.
“One of the best parts is how warmly you’re welcomed,” they say. “It doesn’t matter how old you are, you can be a part of the group.”
Learning to Live Well
Growing up, Annee lived in a food desert. Fresh food was hard to find, and nutrition education wasn’t a part of daily life. “We didn’t read nutrition labels even when we were choosing our meals,” they recall.
Through the Diabetes Prevention Program, they began to understand what eating healthy really looks like. “I’ve learned how to read labels and make good choices that have improved my health. I even started fixing meals because I can get up and move around the house.”
Support That Changes Lives
The results speak for themselves. Since joining the program, Annee has lost more than 11% of their body weight. They move with more ease and independence than they have in years.
“Before I joined the Y, I was scooter and wheelchair dependent,” they say. “Now, I’m walking again. And I’m not done yet.”
Annee credits the Y’s financial assistance program for making their progress possible. “Through the generosity of donors, I was able to participate and continue to be supported by the Y community,” they say.
For Annee, the Y isn’t just a gym. It’s a place where progress is shared, hope is renewed, and every step forward is celebrated together.
