For Richard Uhrich, celebrating his 100th birthday is deeply connected to the place that has supported his health, routine, and sense of community for decades: the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties.
Born on December 11, 1925, Richard’s life spans a century shaped by perseverance, service, faith, and staying active. Raised during the Great Depression, he learned at a young age the value of hard work and resilience. As a young man, he served his country during World War II as a Merchant Marine, transporting critical supplies across the Pacific, and later served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Through every chapter of his life, movement and routine remained constants that helped sustain his strength and independence.
Faith, Family, and Healthy Aging
When asked what has brought him the greatest joy over 100 years, Richard points to his faith and his family. He’s the proud patriarch of 10 children, 27 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. This year’s milestone birthday was especially meaningful as his entire family gathered to celebrate such a cherished birthday.
Richard believes his longevity comes from faith, staying active, and enjoying time with loved ones. The YMCA continues to play an important role in that balance, offering routine, connection, and a welcoming place to show up week after week.
Celebrating a Century of Impact
As Richard celebrated his 100th birthday, Gordon Family YMCA members and staff honored him with photos, decorations, and a message board filled with birthday wishes. His story is a powerful reminder of what the YMCA makes possible over a lifetime: healthy aging, community connection, and a place where values are lived every day.
At 100 years strong, Richard’s legacy reflects the heart of the Y.
