A passionate crowd of community members gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Gig Harbor Sports Fields near the Tom Taylor Family YMCA on Saturday, May 3. Among those in attendance were Charlie Davis, CEO and President of YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties (YMCA), Gig Harbor Mayor Mary Barber, State Senator Deb Krishnadasa, Tom Taylor (the YMCA’s namesake), city councilmembers, YMCA Board of Directors, staff, members, and volunteers, and representatives from many other local organizations.
The project, when complete, will feature two lit synthetic turf fields that will host soccer, football, lacrosse, and T-ball.
The YMCA and the City’s investment in the lit synthetic turf fields addresses an urgent and growing need in Gig Harbor and the surrounding area. More than 9,000 youth play field sports in Gig Harbor, and last year an additional 2,000 players were unable to participate because of limited field space, being waitlisted, or teams limiting participants.
Mayor Barber highlighted the importance of sports in children’s lives, noting the benefits of better academic performance, better social connections, and reduced risky behaviors.
Charlie Davis shared a similar sentiment. “The youth in Gig Harbor have needed these fields for years now, and we’ve been humbled by the support we’ve received from the community,” he said. “Kids need more outdoor spaces where they can play sports and stay physically active."
In addition to providing more space to play, the synthetic turf fields will help ensure fewer cancelations due to poor weather or muddy or unsafe field conditions. Well-lit fields will also keep events safely running year-round, even during dark winter hours.
The YMCA raised $5.9 million in funds from local families and individuals, including a $2 million commitment from the city of Gig Harbor, and is awaiting a $1 million allotment from the state's capital budget, pending the governor's signature.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
