Reflecting on an Amazing Year at the Y

As we step into a new year, we reflect on the successes of 2023 made possible by YOU, our Y community. Together, we've achieved remarkable progress across various programs and initiatives, impacting countless lives in our community.

New Year, New Y: Gym Enhancements in 2023

Four of our centers received upgraded gyms in 2023! Tom Taylor, Gordon, Haselwood, and Mel Korum all welcomed a full set of new amenities. Updates include new and upgraded strength equipment, turf field space and sleds, and machines that offer greater accessibility for members who need mobility support.

The Return of Late Nite: Reviving a Classic Program in 2023

Late Nite is back! Our Y joined thirteen Pierce County organizations to create safe spaces for teens across Tacoma and Lakewood over the summer. This initiative brought communities closer and fulfilled vital needs for Tacoma youth. This free program continues to run throughout the year each Friday at 5 of our YMCA locations.

Youth Take Center Stage at Our State Capitol in 2023

More than 400 students from various schools and YMCA-based programs participated in preparing for the 76th YMCA Youth Legislature at our state Capitol building in Olympia. Teens had the opportunity to present their bills, debate, and lead legislative sessions in the seats of our state representatives.

Y360 Brought the YMCA to You

Our virtual offerings expanded in 2023, you all collectively participated in 42,305 virtual sessions on YMCA360, providing enriching experiences through Coach Training Videos, virtual workouts, and engaging content for youth.

Making Waves Y Camp Counselors Impactful Year

In 2023, 265 teens became leaders through our Counselor in Training (CIT) Program, contributing a staggering 21,200 volunteer hours. Teens in our CIT program develop vital leadership skills that last a lifetime.  

Registration for our CIT program will begin on February 12, 2024.

Day Camp Fun Unleashed

We proudly served 3,294 campers in our Day Camps with support and guidance from our Counselors in Training, adding to a well-rounded and influential experience for Y kids.

Youth Sports Year of Slam-Dunks

Engagement soared with 789 more players joining Youth Sports in 2023. Young people enjoyed soccer, basketball, and more within the Y’s range of offerings. Program participants spent their days filled with laughter, excitement, and joy as they learned the art of sportsmanship alongside caring mentors and coaches.

Aquatics Made a Splash in 2023

Last year, an additional 18,063 spots were offered in swim lessons compared to 2022. With our robust aquatics program, the Y offers a safe and fun space for youth to learn how to swim and build community.

Over 26,000 Kids Learned to Soar in Gymnastics

Our Gymnastics program reached over 26,370 kids, giving our gymnasts, starting as young as 2 years old in Toddler Gym, the integral skills of bodily awareness and strength.
