Get your swimsuit ready, the Plunge is tomorrow! Meet in the Morgan lobby at 6am. Walkers will depart around 6 and runners around 6:30. The group will meet at Owen Beach at 7:20am, then plunge at 7:30am. Busses will leave at 7:45am to return you to the Y. Bring dry gear and it will be driven to Owen Beach. Don't miss this awesome event!

I would like to introduce Marianne Ballew age 76. A charter member along with her husband Richard Ballew for 25 years at the Lakewood Y.
I first met Marianne about 2 months ago when her husband Richard brought her to the Tuesday yoga class. I was in the yoga studio waiting for the class to start and heard this commotion outside with a man being very insistent that the woman go into the yoga studio. I went out to the hallway to see if I could help. Richard Ballew, her husband informed me that she had Alzheimers but that she had done yoga before and wanted her to try it again. I assured him that she would be fine and helped her set her mat up. At first she really did not know where to go and kept moving her mat around. Finally she settled down next to me. I was concerned that she would not be able to do the class and went out to talk with Richard about suggesting a more basic class. He really wanted her to stay and at least try. As soon as class started, she became calm, transitioned from pose to pose and showed knowledge from past experience.
Marianne practiced yoga for 20 years. As a kindergarten teacher, this was her way of taking care of herself. Being health conscious all her life she felt this would help her to maintain her health. This helped her stay energized and ready to face the world. When she was diagnosed with Alzheimers 4 years ago, her yoga practice stopped. They decided to come to Morgan for Richard to take Kelly’s Step Class and saw that there was a yoga class at the same time. So her journey with us at Morgan began. Marianne is now attending yoga twice a week and continues to excel.
I asked Marianne and Richard what they would say to us today. Her reply was ‘ Smile and stay positive about life.’
Richard replied, ‘ Educate yourself and learn to have patience like Job. Forgive yourself when you lose patience.’
