Battling her weight for nearly 20 years, Wendy was determined to make a change as her fortieth birthday neared. Struggling with the ebb and flow of fad diets and inconsistent results, Wendy read an article about the Y's Diabetes Prevention Program and decided to give it a shot.

"It's not just the 31 pounds I've lost so far, or the countless number of inches; it's the way I feel about myself," said Wendy. "It's the extra boost of energy I get from working out five to six days a week, and the pride I feel when I see biceps forming for the first time in my life."

After receiving useful information and tangible ways to reach her goals, Wendy also developed relationships with others in the class that were in it together. She has found enjoyment in working out and has developed a taste for healthier foods. Hearing her children say, "Mommy is buff," is also a plus. Wendy says, "For the first time in my life I feel confident that I will win this battle."

The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program provides a supportive environment where participants work together in a small group over a 12-month period to learn about healthier eating and increasing their physical activity in order to reduce their risk for developing diabetes. Learn more here.
