Before Summer participated in the Third Grade Swim program, her teachers warned Y staff she would be a handful. She didn't go to school often, and when she did, she was late and completely uninterested.
Summer had never seen a pool in person before, so when she showed up for her first day of lessons, she was terrified. By the end of the first day Summer wasn't scared of the pool and left with a positive attitude, something her teachers rarely witnessed.
By the end of the program Summer completed all of the swim skills, and because she had to go to school to participate in lessons, improved her attendance. Summer's behavior and study habits improved in school, and her teachers credit the Y for the positive change.
