Sheryl J.

Tacoma Center YMCA

Sheryl Johnson's life changed dramatically last year when she had a stroke. She found herself in the unfamiliar territory of recovery, and it wasn't easy. But a determined Sheryl reached out to the Y for support, a decision she claims has made all the difference.

She likens the Y to Cheers, "where everybody knows your name." She credits the encouragement of staff members as motivation for her progress. They connected her with people and classes to help her improve her balance, increase her strength, and stay active. "The Y is my healing ground," she says, "and I want to help others as the Y has helped me."

Sheryl is right on course to achieve that goal. With a masters degree in Christian counseling, she plans on pursuing her PhD in counseling in the near future. "With this stroke, I feel that I am becoming a new person for God's glory," said Sheryl. "I would like to thank everyone at the Y. Bless you all."
