Lakewood Family YMCA

One year ago, Sharon spent the summer lying on ice. She was in so much pain she couldn’t move. She’d recently had both knees replaced and a failed spinal fusion that led to a second spinal fusion. One day over lunch, a friend recommended that Sharon try the Enhance®Fitness class at the Lakewood Family YMCA, an evidence-based group exercise program to help older adults stay active, especially those with arthritis.

Sharon was nervous when she attended the class for the first time, but she quickly found out that Beth, the instructor, offered modifications for each exercise so everyone can participate, regardless of ability. Soon, Sharon was coming to EnhanceFitness every week and noticing her strength, endurance, and stability increase.

“I’m a lot stronger after taking this class,” Sharon says. “I went to California a few weeks ago and I was able to maneuver the airport without a cane and without having to ask for a wheelchair. A year ago, I could not do that.”

After being in the EnhanceFitness class for two months, Sharon is stronger and has more energy. Even her physical therapist has noticed her improvement.

“[My physical therapist] could tell just by the way I was walking and moving that I had come a long way,” Sharon says. “I feel stronger; I feel more confident about trying to do things that I haven’t been able to do for quite a while. I think that’s the biggest thing.”
