During a family vacation, Whitney's son Max refused to go near water. He was later diagnosed with mild Autism and ADHD, a combination that can produce heightened sensory sensitivity like aversion to water.
Whitney sought help with the YMCA's Safety Around Water program, which was an instant fit for Max. Within days he was blowing bubbles, doing bobs, and even jumping in the water.
"I hoped he'd become a little more comfortable around the water, but I definitely didn't think four days of lessons would make him comfortable enough to jump in by himself or willingly submerge his face," said Whitney. "It's just so nice for the Y to offer this to the community, especially for people who can't afford a membership."
