Mel Korum Family YMCA
Leon and Jan joined the Y in 2010 to stay active in their retirement. But the Y became much more than chair yoga after Leon was diagnosed with Parkinson’s three years later. After researching the disease and learning that exercise helps prevents symptoms from worsening, Leon starting hitting the weights.
“The people and the staff have helped me a lot, especially in the weight room,” said Leon. “I can talk to anyone and they can help explain things.”
Despite a total foot reconstruction and a torn rotator cuff, Leon has stayed consistent with his exercise, coming to the Y at least four days a week. Beyond exercise, Leon and Jan have formed close friendships with fellow members and staff.
“He’s doing great and we have kept a positive outlook on this disease,” said Jan. “From the time you walk in from the time you leave there is always someone to talk to. It’s more than friendship, it’s family.”
