Many young people often do not get to experience life outside their own neighborhood. That was the case for 13-year-old Kiyante Lamar. Kiyante is an eighth grader at Curtis Junior High School and has been regularly attending Teen Late Nite at the Tacoma Center YMCA. His dream had always been to go to camp. Thanks to the YMCA Annual Campaign, Kiyante’s wishes were granted. He was able to attend Camp Seymour in the summer of 2016.
“It was a lot of fun," said Kiyante, "especially meeting new friends and learning to not be afraid to try new things.”
Kiyante was just one of many teens that got to camp under the stars, play group games, and learn how to canoe out on the Kitsap Peninsula, and he hopes to share some of his impactful camp stories with basketball and football teammates at school.
“I am grateful that someone allowed me to have a camp experience," said Kiyante. "I believe it will bring our team closer together.”
