Ilse Walters was discovered at the pool on Joint Base Lewis-McChord by a YMCA staff member who told her that if she competed in the Senior Olympics, she might win medals. That was all it took for Ilse to start training.
She now swims twice a week at the Lakewood Family YMCA, and recently won three silver medals in the breast stroke at the Senior Olympic Games in Houston, Texas. She swims the 50 meter, 100 meter, and 200 meter events. She is already preparing to qualify for next year, and credits her advantage in the pool to her fast turns.
