Corina V.

Haselwood Family YMCA

Corina has something in common with an estimated 2.8 million women in the United States-- she is a breast cancer survivor. She credits her time as a LIVESTRONG at the YMCA participant as helping her not only feel better physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well.
"I hope they're really easy on me," Corina says, recalling her feelings before her first class. "I hadn't gone to a gym in nearly two years, but the staff were kind and helpful."
Corina says it was that care from staff and other participants, as well as the program's focus on health and healing rather than her disease that made going to each session easy. She says hearing about other participants and their battles helped make her feel at ease when sharing her own experience.
Corina says she and her husband, Royal, worked hard to stay fit prior to her illness, but her cancer treatment made staying active difficult. She credits LIVESTRONG with helping her regain her physical and emotional strength.
"Being there, feeling like I was doing it for someone else, too, was a big help," she says. "Coming to the Y helped me regain confidence and energy. I don't need someone to help me up anymore, and that's a really great feeling."
