Chris H.

Tacoma Center YMCA

In the winter of 2006, Chris' life dramatically changed when she was diagnosed with a vestibular brain injury after suffering a head contusion and hypothermia. The injury left her with lingering issues like loss of balance and depth perception. Simple tasks like walking, climbing stairs, or even stepping off a curb became daily challenges.

After months of rehab, Chris wanted to grow stronger and joined the Y. “I refused to accept that I would have to live with a thirty percent chance of falling every day,” said Chris. Surrounded by words of affirmation and encouraging smiles, she slowly mastered the treadmill, then the elliptical, and even the stair master.

“The YMCA is an incredible organization that believes in possibilities,” said Chris. “That truth resonated with me every day I walked through their doors. I know it was because what I believed was reinforced by their mission to build programs that support a healthy mind, spirit and body for all.”

Now, Chris is able to walk her dogs and chase her granddaughter. She is also an active member on Tacoma Center YMCA’s branch advisory council and a generous donor.

"I support the Y because their work is so near and dear to my heart," said Chris.

Chris encourages her fellow members and friends to consider supporting the YMCA’s Annual Campaign this year to make possibilities happen for everyone.
