When Kristy’s son Brandon put his backpack by the front door hoping to go to school during the summer break, she knew he needed something that offered him more stimulation. So she and her husband decided to enroll Brandon in Summer Day Camp to help facilitate a routine he didn’t have during the summer months, but things were off to a shaky start.
“He was timid and shy and didn’t want to leave us.” Said Kristy. “Sometimes he wouldn’t get out of the car.” But things began to change when counselors stepped in to include Brandon and develop relationships with him that he couldn’t get anywhere else.
As the parent of a special needs child, Kristy says that her son thrives with extra care and activities. “Developmentally, this has been huge for him,” she said. Kristy credits Brandon’s positive experience to the camp counselors who have gone out of their way to include Brandon and welcome him every day at camp.
