Barbara Nevin knew that her health was declining due to weight gain. From 2011 to 2017, her weight steadily rose to 541 pounds. Not only did this gain take a physical toll but an emotional one as well. "I would be sad and depressed and eat my feelings. It doesn’t cure the physical and emotional pain in your body. It only makes it worse.”
Determined, she joined the Haselwood YMCA because she had heard stories of how the Y community helped members improve more than just their physical fitness. She recalled, “I wanted to be surrounded by others who not only wanted to change their physical appearances but also change their emotions.”
At the Y, Barbara has hit her stride. She enjoys learning new things and has joined Aqua Zumba to keep her exercise routine interesting. The music especially gets her excited to get into her daily exercise routine. "It made me want to show up for the class on most days,” said Barbara. With her dedication and hard work, she has been able to lose 92 pounds and plans to stay on track to continue her progress!
She has also found that her emotional state has improved as well since joining the Y. “I have more happiness in my life than sorrow,” she said.“So thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn, grow, and have a daily routine in my life. It is very exhilarating!”
