Anita was tired of being overweight and unhealthy, and when her doctor told her she was high risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes, she knew it was time for a change. She learned about the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program through MultiCare Health System, and signed up for the 12-month program.
"It is a huge time commitment," said Anita. "But I like that it wasn't a quick fix--it was slow measurable progress. Each week we focused on a different topic and got different tips and exercises. It was easy to put those tips into daily life."
After meeting every week with her small group, Anita learned healthy eating habits and created a workout plan, which helped her lose 40 pounds. When she started the program she could only jog for a minute, and now she can run a 5K. She even got her entire family to go on a hike and start eating healthier, something they have never done before.
"I like the group atmosphere," said Anita. "I liked sharing my story with others, and getting support and encouragement from the class. Now I can be healthier for my family."
