University Y Student Center
Allen has fond memories of his childhood days at the Y where he participated in swimming lessons several times every week. "I loved being able to swim for fitness," says Allen. "Doing things that were fun for me, even as an overweight child really took the pressure off me at a young age."
But as time passed, Allen grew busy and eventually ended his membership at the Y altogether. "I began to feel really depressed again," he admits. "Finding the motivation to stay active throughout high school was really difficult for me."
To his excitement, he got a much needed boost on his wellness journey when he was accepted as a student at the University of Washington Tacoma, whose partnership with the YMCA enabled him to utilize the Y, as the cost was included as part of his tuition and fees.
Allen wasted little time in activating his membership. He quickly met with a FitPath coach and learned how to work out properly by creating a unique, personalized plan through the ActivTrax program. With a revamped workout schedule, Allen is now a regular at the Y, where he exercises five times a week and he's lost 40 pounds since January!
As an integral part of the Y family, Allen says he is grateful for all the staff and volunteers who have supported him throughout this very transformative year. He's learned what it means to become healthy in spirit, mind, and body.
