Frequently Asked Questions

A Partnership Between the YMCA and University of Washington | Tacoma

UW Tacoma and the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties collaborated to build a full-service Y located on the university’s campus in downtown Tacoma. The facility is approximately 73,000 square feet and serves UW Tacoma students, faculty and staff, as well as all Y members. The total project cost is $20 million, and is funded largely through a new UW Tacoma student fee. All UW Tacoma students are provided with a Y membership that includes access to all the Y locations in Pierce and Kitsap counties.

This innovative partnership is built on the common commitment of both institutions to serve the community and ensure access to balanced health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can access the University Y Student Center?

All current UW Tacoma students, faculty, staff, and Y members can access the University Y Student Center. Once students have picked up their YMCA membership cards at the University Y Student Center, they will have access at any Y location in Pierce and Kitsap Counties.  Please view map. You must pick up your membership card at the University Y Student Center location first, however.

Who supported this project?

Support for this project has been demonstrated by UW Tacoma students throughout the planning for this facility and partnership. In 2013 Spring Quarter, the Student Center Planning Committee conducted a survey for all students. Over 97% of students supported the facility, and over 80% of students supported a $180 new fee to fund the project. In June 2013, the Services and Activities Fee Committee instituted a new student fee of $180 per quarter to support the construction and operation of the University Y Student Center. The fee was approved by the Board of Regents, and the Student Center Fee will take effect for the 2015 Winter Quarter. This is a mandatory fee, similar to the Services and Activities Fee and Student Technology Fee.

I am currently a Y member and a UW Tacoma student. Am I getting charged twice?

If you are currently a Y member in Pierce and Kitsap Counties, please come into the facility and let us know. That way we can take care of merging your accounts and turning off your Y account in the system. Additional questions regarding current Y memberships should be directed to Roberta Wilson at 253-534-4710.

What about international students?

If you are an international student, please register your membership at University Y Student Center and provide your passport with photo ID. We would be happy to set up your membership for you!

Are there UW Tacoma students that are unable to have a Y membership at  the University Y Student Center?

Yes. Students enrolled in fee based programs such as Master of Cybersecurity and Leadership, Master of Accounting, students enrolled in tuition exemption programs for the state, UW Tacoma employees, or Access Programs for senior citizens, are not eligible for the UW Tacoma student membership program.

Students interested in these programs are encouraged to contact the Y directly at 253-272-9622 to set up a membership.

What do I need to bring with me to enroll?

All students need to bring their Husky card and state issued photo ID to activate their Y membership at University Y Student Center. If you are registered for the 2015 Winter Quarter, please bring a copy of your 2015 Winter Quarter class schedule, or share it by your smart phone from your MyUW screen to ensure your membership is processed in a timely manner.

What kind of amenities are included in the facility?

ActivTrax personalized, progressive fitness plans, NCAA Basketball court, Child Watch Nursery, free weights and weight equipment, Game room (UW Tacoma student space), Group exercise rooms, indoor track, locker rooms with vanity areas, meeting spaces, student assembly hall, reflection room, rock climbing wall, secure storage lockers and volleyball.

I am a UW Seattle/Bothell student. Can I get the same Y membership as UW Tacoma students?

No. The Y membership for University Y Student Center is paid for by a new UW Tacoma student fee. UW Seattle and UW Bothell students can use the facility if they have an active Y membership, triangle membership through YMCA of King County, or purchase a guest pass at the Welcome Center.
