Healthy Lifestyles

At the Y, we believe healthy living is about more than just physical health. That's why we offer programs to support healthy lifestyle changes in spirit, mind, and body. From chronic disease prevention initiatives like the Diabetes Prevention Program to support for cancer survivors like the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program to resources for navigating life's challenges in our Life University small group classes, the Y is your partner in healthy living.

Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program Registration Required

Did you know 1 out of 3 adults in the United States has high blood pressure? According to the American Hearth Association, nearly 80 million adults have high blood pressure. Less than half have it under control. High blood pressure is often referred to as "the Silent Killer" because there are typically no warning signs or symptoms. It is also a key, modifiable risk factor for both heart disease and stroke.

To address the issue of high blood pressure, the Y designed an evidenced-based, self-monitoring program to help participants better manage their blood pressure. Participants receive support from trained Healthy Heart Ambassadors during the four-month program. During this time participants are encouraged to:

  • Measure and record their blood pressure at least two times per month
  • Attend two personalized consultations per month
  • Attend monthly Nutrition Education Seminars Program

PROGRAM GOALS:

  • Reduction in blood pressure
  • Better blood pressure management
  • Increased awareness of triggers that elevate blood pressure
  • Enhanced knowledge to develop healthier eating habits.
