Water Safety

With over 900 miles of shoreline in Pierce and Kitsap Counties, we believe it's vital that everyone in our community is safe in and around bodies of water. Water Safety programs help children and adults learn important safety skills and provide life-saving training and certifications.

Basic Life Support CPR/AED/Oxygen/Basic First Aid Certification Registration Required



Join our ASHI certified instructors to learn basic lifesaving techniques. After completing a five-and-a-half hour online learning course and attending an in-person class, you will be certified in Basic Life Support (CPR/AED) Oxygen, and Basic First Aid by the American Health and Safety Institute.

Junior Lifeguard Registration Required



This course is designed to give participants the basic skills and knowledge of what lifeguard responsibilities are and learn the skills necessary to assist a lifeguard from the deck.

Lifeguard Certification Registration Required



Learn to lifeguard in a variety of settings including pool, lake, river, surf, and water park. Earn certifications: YMCA Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and Oxygen Administration.

Parent/Child Swim | Life Jacket Fitting Drop-in Class



Make sure you know what to look for when picking out the proper lifejacket for your child. Here's Stephenie Martin to share some tips to think about when purchasing a lifejacket for your child.

As our weather starts to get nicer, more and more families will head to the beach. Y staff share some tips to keep in mind to stay safe in outdoor waters.

Safety Around Water Registration Required



Participants will learn how to front and back float, jump in and return to the edge of the pool, and to kick on their front and back for ten feet. Participants will also learn how to use a personal floatation device.

Scouts | Lifesaving Merit Badge Registration Required



Scouts will be guided by staff and have the opportunity to complete requirements for their Lifesaving Merit Badge. This program is open to scouts of any gender.

Prerequisites:

  • Must be 14-21 years old.
  • Must have completed the swimming merit badge.
  • Must be able to swim 400 yards continuously.

Scouts will be guided by staff and have the opportunity to complete requirements for their Swimming Merit Badge (with the exception of requirement #7). This program is open to scouts of any gender.

Teen/Adult Swim | Lifejacket Fitting Drop-in Class



To be safe and effective, your life jacket must fit properly. Y staff will give you a few tips for a perfect fit.

Teen/Adult Water Safety | CPR Skills Ages 15+ | Drop-in Class



Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. Immediate CPR can increase the chances of survival after cardiac arrest. Watch this CPR skills video.

Third Grade Swim Other

Water Watcher Drop-in Class



Assigning a Water Watcher when participating in any activity around the water is critical to the safety of those in the water. Even with a Lifeguard on duty, you should designate a Water Watcher. Join us in watching this Water Watcher video.
