During Black History Month, we celebrate the rich contributions of African-Americans to the cultural fabric of our diverse nation. For more than 160 years, the Y has provided safe, welcoming spaces where people of diverse backgrounds can find resources and a supportive community to develop their talents and reach their full potential.

During the 1960s, many YMCAs throughout the South served as meeting places for leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. In the early '60s, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. met with other civil rights activists at a Y in Atlanta.

Black History Month has roots in the Y. In 1915, African-American historian Carter G. Woodson organized the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History at the Wabash Avenue YMCA in Chicago, leading to the creation of Negro History Week in 1926 and eventually Black History Month. Today, Woodson’s group is known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, and the Wabash Avenue YMCA is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Anthony Bowen was born into slavery in 1809 and bought his freedom in 1830. He went on to found the world's first African-American YMCA in Washington, D.C. in 1853 and was an advocate of education for free blacks, a religious leader, and the first African-American to work as a clerk in the U.S. Patent Office.

American Heart Month Tip: Cut back on salt little by little—and pay attention to the natural tastes of various foods. Your taste for salt will lessen over time. Additionally, keep salt off the kitchen counter and the dinner table and substitute spices, herbs, garlic, vinegar or lemon juice to season foods.

Whether you've been a member for years or you're just getting started, our Making Change Stick Workshop can help you support or sustain positive changes in your life. This month, we're offering two workshops, on February 4 and February 20. The class is free. Sign up at ymcapkc.org/register.

Carolyn started volunteering at the Y in 1961 with an adaptive swim program to fulfill a nursing school requirement. She started out helping dress the children for their lessons, but quickly decided that she wanted to work with them in the pool. So, she became certified as an instructor.

“[My experience at the Y] taught me to accept people, regardless of any disability,” Carolyn says. Read the rest of Carolyn's story at https://www.ymcapkc.org/ystories/?sid=789
