SilverSneakers Update

Our commitment to your health and well-being is unwavering. We will continue to offer similar classes and programs, with the same Y instructors. To ease the transition process, the Y has created a three-year transitional membership rate of $44 per month for current SilverSneakers® members, as well as a streamlined Financial Assistance process to ensure cost is not a barrier for anyone to have access to a healthy lifestyle.  SilverSneakers® members may sign up at this rate through December 31, 2017. The rate will be honored for up to three years, and will expire on December 31, 2019.

Why will you no longer be providing SilverSneakers memberships?

The Y was notified in October that SilverSneakers®, which is managed by Healthways, was no longer a benefit option for some insurance subscribers. This impacted 5,100 SilverSneakers® members using the Y, who would no longer have their fitness provider benefit.

At the Y, our mission is to ensure everyone in our community has equal access to health in spirit, mind, and body. For remaining SilverSneakers members, new requirements from Healthways (SilverSneakers®) made it impossible for us to maintain our commitment to equal access, so we did not renew our contract for 2017.

The Y is committed to expanding access to affordable, effective, and fun healthy living programming for seniors. The Y is exploring how to unify our own programming with member benefits so you can keep your healthcare dollars seamlessly invested in the future. Medicare has already committed to covering certain YMCA programs effective in 2018. The Y is founded on adapting our services to meet the health needs of our communities. We continue to explore and expand on how you can benefit from investing in your Y membership as part of your healthcare planning.

What can the Y offer to seniors on a fixed income?

Our commitment to your health and well-being is unwavering. We will continue to offer similar classes and programs, with the same Y instructors. To ease the transition process, the Y has created a three-year transitional membership rate of $44 per month for current SilverSneakers® members, as well as offering a streamlined financial assistance process to ensure cost is not a barrier for anyone to have access to a healthy lifestyle.

SilverSneakers® members may sign up at this rate through December 31, 2017. The rate will be honored for up to three years, and will expire on December 31, 2019. Financial assistance is available.

The Y has committed to offering both “At Your Best” and a new program called “Optum Fitness Advantage.” Each of these fitness benefits are included at no additional premium through certain UnitedHealthcare Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plans.

What happens to our SilverSneakers classes?

While we will no longer use the term “SilverSneakers®,” the goal is to continue to offer a similar schedule of classes for our senior members, with the same Y instructors.
